Reception Class Page

Our Reception staff this year includes Mr Murphy-Sheridan, Miss Neason and Mrs Graty and we are delighted to support the children on their learning journey at St. Cuthbert’s School.

All children are unique and we aim to provide them with a wide, rich and creative curriculum, which encourages the children to continually find out more and explore new ideas and learning styles. The children explore the EYFS curriculum through play-based learning, including both teacher and child-initiated activities.

Our Catholic Faith is very important to us and we strive to ensure that we live out our Mission Statement each day, to the best of our ability. Reception children join in with whole school Prayer and Liturgy, as well as helping to prepare for our Prayer Services in the classroom. The Reception children also attend whole school Mass in our school hall every Friday.

Our School Mission Statement, leads with the phrase ‘Love one another, as I have loved you’ and we aim to teach the children the true meaning of this phrase, during their time in Reception. They are encouraged to take care of each other, learn how to make good friendships and know that we are all part of God’s Family. Our class saint is St. Teresa of Calcutta, who has shown us how to be kind and compassionate to others. We use some of her sayings as a guide to help us lead our lives such as, ‘Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.’

Our faith permeates all that we do in school, both through our lessons and how we behave and respond to each other in our daily lives. We follow the guidance of Catholic Social Teaching to support the children in their Personal and Social Development. Our prayer focus in class is continually updated to reflect the Liturgical calendar throughout the year. We pray together daily and the children are encouraged to share their own ideas for prayer.

The Reception children take part in a weekly PE lesson which has an emphasis on active learning and commitment to a lifelong active lifestyle. This is in addition to the gross motor and fine motor activities planned for through our Physical Development curriculum and a weekly dance session with a qualified dance instructor.

We are always delighted when parents are involved in their child’s learning and we value the support that parents give to school. Parents are invited to a Reading and Phonics Meeting during the Autumn Term and a Parent workshop during the Spring Term. Our open-door policy enables parents to speak to the Reception staff every day and we welcome discussions about your child, which will help us to ensure that have a happy, productive time in our class.
